Welcome to the Ride!! On July 30, 2009 we will begin a great adventure. A 900-mile bike ride through New England visiting all the twenty-four Locals of Joint Council 10. We will begin at Local 82 in south Boston, travel north into Maine across to Vermont and then head south into New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island finishing back at Local 82 on August 12, 2009. Our goal is to raise money to fund research for cancer, specifically--appendiceal cancer. The money raised will be used for education and research. Cancer of the appendix is rare and because it is rare there is not much money available for researching this type of cancer. We have a personal reason for attempting this trip. Bob Morrissey, Jr.has been a brother teamster for 28 years. Bob was diagnosed in 2007 with appendiceal cancer. He has undergone surgery and chemotherapy. Presently he is well, working and about to take a bike ride. His riding partner will be Leif Thornton also a brother teamster for 27 years. The money raised will go through Tufts Medical Center. Bob's doctor, Martin Goodman, MD, will be directing the education and research. OUR CHALLENGE TO ALL OF OUR TEAMSTER BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND THEIR FRIENDS: We challenge each of you to donate $10.00 (about the cost of breakfast at your favorite diner.) A gesture like this will raise significant funds to start this research project. SPECIAL UP DATE On June 2, 2009 Bob had a second surgery to remove a tumor that had grown since his first operation in 2007. The surgery turned in to a major operation because the one tumor turned out to be many. It seems unlikely that Bob will be up to biking in time to ride with me. If anyone wants to ride with me for any part of the trip your company will be welcome and appreciated. There will be an itinerary posted on the Ride Schedule page shortly. |
